Paul Reubens / Pee-wee Herman
Paul Reubens (1952–2023) was an American actor, comedian, and writer best known for creating the eccentric, childlike character Pee-wee Herman. Reubens developed Pee-wee in the late 1970s through stage comedy, which led to the cult hit The Pee-wee Herman Show and the iconic film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985), directed by Tim Burton. He later starred in the Emmy-winning children’s TV series Pee-wee’s Playhouse (1986–1990), which became a pop-culture phenomenon blending surreal humor with colorful, offbeat storytelling.
Although his career faced setbacks after legal troubles in the 1990s, Reubens revived Pee-wee for new projects, including Pee-wee’s Big Holiday (2016). He remains celebrated for his unique comedic style and for creating one of the most distinctive, enduring characters in American pop culture.
