The Holy Mountain 1973

The Holy Mountain is an experimental fantasy film directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Known for its surreal, symbolic imagery, the film follows a Christ-like figure called The Thief who, after wandering through a corrupt, materialistic world, is guided by a powerful Alchemist (played by Jodorowsky himself).

The Alchemist assembles a group of wealthy, spiritually lost individuals—each representing a planet in the solar system—and leads them on a mystical quest to the Holy Mountain, where they seek enlightenment and immortality. The film critiques greed, organized religion, militarism, and consumerism through shocking visuals and allegory, ultimately breaking the “fourth wall” to remind viewers that truth lies beyond cinema.
