Werner Herzog

Werner Herzog (b. 1942) is a German filmmaker, screenwriter, actor, and documentarian, regarded as one of the most influential and unconventional directors in world cinema. Emerging in the New German Cinema movement of the 1960s–70s, he is known for pushing both his actors and himself to extreme physical and psychological limits in pursuit of truth.

His feature films often explore obsession, madness, and humanity’s struggle against nature—famous examples include Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972), Fitzcarraldo (1982), and Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979). Herzog is equally renowned for his documentaries, such as Grizzly Man (2005), Encounters at the End of the World (2007), and Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010), which mix poetic narration with striking visuals.

Beyond filmmaking, Herzog is known for his distinctive voice, philosophical outlook, and eccentric persona, making him a cultural icon far beyond cinema circles.
