The Deer Hunter 1978
The Deer Hunter is an epic war drama directed by Michael Cimino. Set in a small Pennsylvania steel town, it follows a group of friends—Michael (Robert De Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken), and Steven (John Savage)—whose lives are shattered after they are drafted to fight in the Vietnam War.
The film moves from their working-class lives and deer-hunting rituals at home to the horrors of war, most famously the brutal Russian roulette scenes in captivity. After the war, they struggle with trauma, loss, and the inability to return to their former lives, culminating in tragedy when Nick is unable to escape the cycle of violence.
It won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and is remembered as one of the most powerful depictions of the Vietnam War’s psychological toll.
